About the Island
Amelia Island boasts a rich and colorful history that sets it apart from any other destination in Florida. Known as the "Isle of Eight Flags," it’s the only place in the United States to have been under the rule of eight different national flags: France, Spain, Great Britain, the Patriots, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States, and the United States. This unique blend of cultures and influences has shaped the island’s distinctive character.

The island was originally inhabited by the Timucua people before being explored by the French in 1562. Over the centuries, pirates, soldiers, and traders left their mark, especially in Fernandina Beach, whose historic downtown still preserves much of its 19th-century charm. During the golden age of shipping and trade, Fernandina flourished as a bustling seaport.

Today, the island's historic roots can still be felt in its preserved architecture, museums, and forts.

From tales of buried treasure and pirate legends to grand Victorian homes and Civil War history, Amelia Island offers a fascinating journey through time for curious visitors.
